Hangul | The Mysterious Korean letters

by KOREAN VIBE 2020. 12. 21.

Why people are learning Hangŭl

Do you like BTS or Lee Minho ? Do you want to understand Korean drama or the emotions of Kpop celebrities that have never been subtitled yet ? Learning Korean letters would bring you to a much higher understanding about the whole aspects of what they think, care and their cultural background rather than just dry messages.

The King - Korean drama

Korea has pretty developed cosmetics too. Have you heard of Primer, 3-cushions BB compact pack, Nano capsuled wrinkle serum, Tattoo eye brushes & lip sticks and so on. Every year, the industry introduces one step more advanced beauty-tech that would brighten your face in important meetings, interviews, wedding day or blind date. However, you can't get the up-to-date information unless you are used to Korean language enough to shop through via Korean online shopping mall by your self.

You can write your Hangul name in a day

Thankfully, Korean alphabet - "Hangul(한글)" is known for its easiness and scientific features which had been created based on scholaristic research implemented by King Sejong (and his research lab) in 1443. What you need to remember are only 19 consonants, 21 vowels and 27 final consonants. That's all. Some says, you could write your name in Hangul after "just a day" of Korean class. (if it is not a low-quality commercial class probably)

Book Hunminjeongeum(훈민정음). Its first chapter explains why King Sejong began the new Korean language project

The King Sejong's version of this language was called "Hun-min-jeong-eum(훈민정음)". After his death, it has modified a little bit by Hangul scholars and public usages. Finally the name was fixed as "Hangul(한글)" in 1910.
Looking back to the purpose of the King Sejong's research project, he was sorry for the fact that the public's actual language style was different from chinese letters - which was official language at the time. Also, Chinese language was too difficult to learn for lay people. His first aim of the project was to create a language that everyone can learn easily. This background story is written in "훈민정음 어제 서문".

What to learn first ?

Once again, what you need to remember are only 19 consonants, 21 vowels and 27 final consonants. These will express almost all sounds you pronounce. At this point, there are two tips you may need to know to understand Korean in relation to scientific features of Hangul.

2 useful tips for primary learners of Korean

  • First, Hangul Consonants are shaped after the appearance of the vocal organ's form - The consonant shape represents the movement of your vocal organs when you make "that sound"

  • Second, all Hangul Vowels are compositions of 2 lines : ㅡ  and

Korean Alphabet consonants(left) and vowels(right)

What you will learn next

What you will master one by one is the following.

Like when you learn any foreign languages, memorise (1) Consonants (2) Vowels first. (There are a few different shapes of consonants needed only for final position. You can check them out later on) Because Korean is a "What You Hear Is What You Write" language, mastering basic alphabets take a huge part in your entire learning.

As the last tip for the Korean-study candidate, I could give you a hint about how the Korean letters are formed with the basic components. Look at the following figure.

Hangul is composed of consonants and vowels

All Hangul letters are composed using a consistent formula. Each letter requires one consonant and vowel each at least. Final consonant is optional.

Once you have decided to learn Korean language for a New Year's resolution or as a long term project, please pass through Hangul alphabet study quickly. That way, you can read street signs and order delicious local foods during Korean travel. You will read "비비" means BB cream shopping around in K beauty shops. Who knows, your Korean friend could confess love to you saying "사랑해".

For your smoother voyage in learning a new language, let me raise my glass here. Cheers ! 쨘 !
