Knowing about official currency unit shapes early experiences in foreign countries. For those planning to travel/live in South Korea, googling Korean currency might have been included in travel preparation.
As you might know, currency of South Korean is called "won" in real life. The ISO 4217 international standardized currency code is KRW, and the abbreviation symbol is ₩.
Unfortunately, Korea does not useDOLLAR. This would let you to checkbill(&coin)type firstbefore moving on to the real game.
As mentioned above,Korean money unit isWONinstead of DOLLAR.Let’s begin at this point. You would like to know total 8 types of Korean money. There are 4 banknotes as well as 4 coins you will handle in your Korean life. Those are like below.

Based on these fact,the ways of reading Korean moneywould be discussed in following chapters.

Your ship will carry a bag of chunks of romano cheese soon. Why? Because your ship carries a bag of chunks of Romano cheese! This phrase is just my suggestion which could ease the first meeting with number 10, 100, 1000 and 10000. Because these numbers pronounce like written in the box below.
10 pronounced as SIB for SHIP 100pronounced as BAEG for BAG 1000pronounced as CHEON for CHUNK 10000pronounced as MAHN for ROMANO
10, 100, 1000, 10000 are used as currency unit like you noticed. Also they accompany middling coin/bills in between, for example, 50, 500 and so on. Once you remember "OH MY GOD!", you could complete reading 8 types of all Korean money. Remember, 5 sounds OH my god!!!

KOREAN MONEY, 8 Types
1,000 won CHEON + WON 천 원
Do you remember “cheon” for “chunk”? This is “cheon won” bill. 1000 won banknote is blue color one. In south Korea, 1000 won bill appears to be at pretty similar position with 1 US dollar. Although it’s currency exchange rate is about 85% of USD as of 2022 March, I prefer to make it simple saying 1000won equals to 1dollar.
5,000won OH + CHEON + WON 오천 원
Do you rememner “oh” for “oh my god”? “oh cheon won” is signifying 5 of “cheon won”, at the same time, is how to call light brown 5000 won Korean banknote. If you agree to my simplified money concept, you would like to remember that 5000won plays role of 5dollar.
10,000won MAHN + WON 만 원
“mahn” from “romano” combined with “won”. “Mahn won” refers a green colored banknote with King Sejong on it, which values 10 dollar approximately. 10,000 won and 1,000 won banknotes feel like the most frequantly used types of money in South Korea.
50,000won OH + MAHN + WON 오만 원
Then, how would you call five “mahn won”s? “Oh mahn won” must have springed in your mind I guess. This beautiful yellow color Korean banknote is newely published in 2016, to indicate about 50 dollar value in South Korea.
10won SIB + WON 십 원
“sib” for “ship”. This tiny 1.22g coin is “sib won”. This is made from copper and alumium alloy, and value at about 1 cent in USD.
50won OH + SIB + WON 오십 원
“oh” for “oh my god”, and “sib” for “ship”. You can call this coin “oh sib won”. 50 won coin is a bit bigger than 10 won physically. Rice plant is printed on the front side. This is around 5 cents in USD.
100won BAEG + WON 백 원
Do you carry “baeg won” in your “bag”? 100 won has once been released as a precious paper type banknote originally. As time went, it transformed itself to a coin now. Admiral General Yi(or Lee) on the front side reflect how valuable “beag won” was in the past. (10 cents for now)
500won OH + BAEG + WON 오백 원
This crane coin values same to five “baeg won”s. “oh baeg won”, so to say, is about half one dollar.
You might like to repeat reading names of Korean currency several times more, then would move on to the next step. Oh wait, how do you say 5,000won in Korean?

FYI,number 1 has a its own sound only for bigger money than 100,000,000 won, when it comes first in the figure. A number with eight of zeros - X00,000,000 - is called "eog" which is a bigger unit than "mahn". In application, 100,000,000 is spoken as "eel eog(일 억)" in practical reading.

Prioritising. That matters for efficient study as you know. Among 4 units of 10, 100, 1000, 10000, which one deserves coming first?
Do you care coins when you pay? When buying a thing for $59.85, paying 60 dollar sounds quite common. In the same context, for example, a Korean express train(KTX) ticket from Seoul to Busan costs 59,800won as of April 2022. The biggest money unit of this price is "MAHN" (for Romano), while the second biggest is "CHEON" (for chunk). Like you pay in dollar, you might deem this 6 mahn won approximately.
On the other hand, the price of Starbucks Americano(Tall size) is 4,500won at the moment in Korea. In this case, which unit do you care the most? Hence, the most efficient way of studying Korean money for practical use is, in my suggestion, aclimatizing with MAHN WON unit and CHEON WON unit first. Only when you spare more time, practicing coin units sounds absolutely fitting.
