TO GO in KOREAN
| 1 |
Let me unveil one truth first. Once you know “this truth” you could express an intent “to go” in Korean right away. To talk about the fact, Koreans use an English word quite generally to say “to go” in Korean. This is THE localized English word.
Take out (테이크아웃)
With knowing this fact, you are already half way through - I’m glad that you can avoid sweaty effort for memorizing a new Korean word for “takeout”.

Is there no genuine Korean word for "to-go"? Yes, there is! Korean word “pojang(포장)” is also used by native speakers. However, you would be fine as long as you can catch the sound “pojang” from questioning phrase “Pojangiseyo?”. You can remember “takeout” for yourself to speak out. *** The word “pojang” itself means like “boxing/wraping”.
Pojang 포장
: boxing/wraping to go
Pojang-iseyo? 포장이세요?
: Is this for wrapping(to-go)?
Pojang-iyo 포장이요
: This is for wrapping(to-go).
EAT HERE in KOREAN
The basal Korean word for "to eat" is "meog-da"(먹다). After getting "-da"(-다) off, the head part "meog-"(먹-) transforms together with suffixes.
meog-da 먹다
: to eat
Before seeing phrases, let us meet one more useful word ahead. Saying only this word would work sometimes in practical situation because you are a foreigner. The helpful Korean word you would want to remember is "yeogi" which means "here".
yeogi 여기
: here
Now, let's look at key phrases of this learning. My go-to phrase for "eat here or to-go" question is "meog-go gal geo-ye-yo". As long as you can speak this out clearly, there won't be a drama I bet.
meoggo gal geoyeyo ☆
먹고 갈 거예요
: I will eat and go
Adding a word "here" in the phrase above could clarify your intent much better - only when your brain has spare room.
yeogiseo meoggo gal geoyeyo
여기서 먹고 갈 거예요
: I will eat here and go
MIND SAYING "deusigo" AS CUSTOMER
I've heard "Deusigo gaseyo? (드시고 가세요?)" more often than "Meoggo gaseyo?(먹고 가세요?)" from cafe/restaurant workers. That's because, like you might know, Korean language has "respectful" way of saying which varies your vocab choices.
"deusida" is a formal word that you can use for higher people in hierachy, and service people tend to use "deusida(드시다)" instead of "meogda(먹다)" to be nice to you. Even though both words indicate same meanings functionally, you might want to avoid using "deusida" talking about actions of yourself. Because you could look rude with that.

CULTURE REVIEW
PAYING AT TABLE OR FRONT DESK?
Paying at the front desk is general - different from several western countries' custom. You could see visitors are lining up to pay for their meal in busy restaurants.
TIPPING REQUIRED?
No. Korean service workers tend to be kind. They seem to do their best for helping customers - you would understand this after language barrier faded away. However, tipping is not usual in Korean culture. They don't expect tip. You can take their good will as it is.
GETTING BILL FROM THE FIRST
Natural in Korea. Some might deem giving you a bill as soon as ordering food is impolite. However, Korean people like to know if entire meal price is safe in their budget or if they'd better stop adding dishes. For this reason, keeping bill at the table and checking it real-time is natural in Korea. Well, unless when having difficult person in the meal time, or when you want yourself look cool.
