PROLOGUE
Knowing about official currency unit shapes early experiences in foreign countries. For those planning to travel/live in South Korea, googling Korean currency might have been included in travel preparation.
As you might know, currency of South Korean is called "won" in real life. The ISO 4217 international standardized currency code is KRW, and the abbreviation symbol is ₩.
Unfortunately, Korea does not use DOLLAR. This would let you to check bill(&coin) type first before moving on to the real game.
As mentioned above, Korean money unit is WON instead of DOLLAR. Let’s begin at this point. You would like to know total 8 types of Korean money. There are 4 banknotes as well as 4 coins you will handle in your Korean life. Those are like below.
10 won
50 won
100 won
500 won
1000 won
5000 won
10000 won
50000 won
Based on these fact, the ways of reading Korean money would be discussed in following chapters.
By any chance, if you hit this article for the curiosity about portraits & drawings printed on Korean banknotes and coins, you would enjoy this article more.
On the other hand, practical info about value of Korean money such as coffee price in Starbucks Korea, and average KRW-USD exchange rate are written in a different article, with a hope it could help budget planning before your travel.

BRING IT ON ! (Arr...)
FIRST MEETING with KOREAN MONEY
Your SHIP carries a BAG of CHUNKS of ROMANO cheese
(ah?)
Your ship will carry a bag of chunks of romano cheese soon. Why? Because your ship carries a bag of chunks of Romano cheese! This phrase is just my suggestion which could ease the first meeting with number 10, 100, 1000 and 10000. Because these numbers pronounce like written in the box below.
10 pronounced as SIB for SHIP
100 pronounced as BAEG for BAG
1000 pronounced as CHEON for CHUNK
10000 pronounced as MAHN for ROMANO
10, 100, 1000, 10000 are used as currency unit like you noticed. Also they accompany middling coin/bills in between, for example, 50, 500 and so on. Once you remember "OH MY GOD!", you could complete reading 8 types of all Korean money. Remember, 5 sounds OH my god!!!
5 ...... OH my god!!!!
50 is combined sound of “oh” and “sib”, OH-SIB
500 is combined sound of “oh” and “baek”, OH-BAEG
5000 is combined sound of “oh” and “cheon”, OH-CHEON
50000 is combined sound of “oh” and “mahn”, OH-MAHN
Now you knew names of all Korean bills, as well as coins. As a kind of reviewing, let's see visual figures of each money and their name together!
KOREAN MONEY, 8 Types
1,000 won
CHEON + WON
천 원
Do you remember “cheon” for “chunk”? This is “cheon won” bill. 1000 won banknote is blue color one. In south Korea, 1000 won bill appears to be at pretty similar position with 1 US dollar. Although it’s currency exchange rate is about 85% of USD as of 2022 March, I prefer to make it simple saying 1000won equals to 1dollar.
5,000 won
OH + CHEON + WON
오천 원
Do you rememner “oh” for “oh my god”? “oh cheon won” is signifying 5 of “cheon won”, at the same time, is how to call light brown 5000 won Korean banknote. If you agree to my simplified money concept, you would like to remember that 5000won plays role of 5dollar.
10,000 won
MAHN + WON
만 원
“mahn” from “romano” combined with “won”. “Mahn won” refers a green colored banknote with King Sejong on it, which values 10 dollar approximately. 10,000 won and 1,000 won banknotes feel like the most frequantly used types of money in South Korea.
50,000 won
OH + MAHN + WON
오만 원
Then, how would you call five “mahn won”s? “Oh mahn won” must have springed in your mind I guess. This beautiful yellow color Korean banknote is newely published in 2016, to indicate about 50 dollar value in South Korea.
10 won
SIB + WON
십 원
“sib” for “ship”. This tiny 1.22g coin is “sib won”. This is made from copper and alumium alloy, and value at about 1 cent in USD.
50 won
OH + SIB + WON
오십 원
“oh” for “oh my god”, and “sib” for “ship”. You can call this coin “oh sib won”. 50 won coin is a bit bigger than 10 won physically. Rice plant is printed on the front side. This is around 5 cents in USD.
100 won
BAEG + WON
백 원
Do you carry “baeg won” in your “bag”? 100 won has once been released as a precious paper type banknote originally. As time went, it transformed itself to a coin now. Admiral General Yi(or Lee) on the front side reflect how valuable “beag won” was in the past. (10 cents for now)
500 won
OH + BAEG + WON
오백 원
This crane coin values same to five “baeg won”s. “oh baeg won”, so to say, is about half one dollar.
If you are curious about people and pictures printed on Korean money, you might like to read this article.
You might like to repeat reading names of Korean currency several times more, then would move on to the next step. Oh wait, how do you say 5,000won in Korean?

SECOND MEETING with KOREAN MONEY
Forget about 5 bills at this moment. You will need to remember 10, 100, 1000, 10000 in Korean for now. It might sound a right time to bring up the phrase, "Your SHIP carries a BAG of CHUNKS of ROMANO cheese".

100 baeg 백

FROM 1 TO 9 in KOREAN
What else do we can make fun of? That's numbers from 1 to 9. You already know one of them though (Don’t you remember? OH my god! o0o). Eight numbers. This is the last thing you need to remember to finish this money reading study.
SOUND of NUMBERS 1~9
1 일 pronounced as EEL for EEL fish
2 이 pronounced as EE for EAST
3 삼 pronounced as SAM for SAMOSA
4 사 pronounced as SA for SILO
5 오 pronounced as OH for ( you fill this )
6 육 pronounced as YUG for YUGOSLAVIA
7 칠 pronounced as CHIL for CHILLI
8 팔 pronounced as PAL for PAYPAL
9 구 pronounced as GOO for GOOEY
FYI, number 1 has a its own sound only for bigger money than 100,000,000 won, when it comes first in the figure. A number with eight of zeros - X00,000,000 - is called "eog" which is a bigger unit than "mahn". In application, 100,000,000 is spoken as "eel eog(일 억)" in practical reading.

Are you used to the pronounciations of Korean numbers from 1 to 9 now? To summarize it up, the numbers pronounced as Eel, Ee, Sam, Sa, Oh, Yug, Chil, Pal, Goo, which reminds us eel fish, east, samosa, silo, oh my god, Yugoslavia, chilli, Paypal, gooey respectively.
Are these confusing a little yet? No worries. We will repeat these 9 numbers 4 times very soon, for applying on 10, 100, 1000, 10000 won units.
I'm not a smoker though, I need a smoko break..
APPLICATIONS
Prioritising. That matters for efficient study as you know. Among 4 units of 10, 100, 1000, 10000, which one deserves coming first?
Do you care coins when you pay? When buying a thing for $59.85, paying 60 dollar sounds quite common. In the same context, for example, a Korean express train(KTX) ticket from Seoul to Busan costs 59,800won as of April 2022. The biggest money unit of this price is "MAHN" (for Romano), while the second biggest is "CHEON" (for chunk). Like you pay in dollar, you might deem this 6 mahn won approximately.
On the other hand, the price of Starbucks Americano(Tall size) is 4,500won at the moment in Korea. In this case, which unit do you care the most? Perhapse, the first digit "4" gets your attention at first, which is at "CHEON" position. [Click this to see an article for $10 budget plan in Starbucks Korea]
Hence, the most efficient way of studying Korean money for practical use is, in my suggestion, aclimatizing with MAHN WON unit and CHEON WON unit first. Only when you spare more time, practicing coin units sounds absolutely fitting.

READING KOREAN MONEY, in PRACTICAL
COMBINATORIAL MONEY READING
Reading combinatorial number is, simply to say, reading a price from left to right in order. Each number in price is combinatorial of one of numbers between 1~9, and one of 10, 100, 1000, 1000 units. Check out 4 examples below.
₩ 12,340
- 10,000 mahn 만
- 2,000 ee-cheon 이천
- 300 sam-baeg 삼백
- 40 sa-sib 사십
- 0 (silent)
≫ mahn ee-cheon sam-baeg sa-sib won
(만 이천 삼백 사십 원)
₩ 67,890
- 60,000 yug-mahn 육만
- 7,000 chil-cheon 칠천
- 800 pal-baeg 팔백
- 90 gu-sib 구십
- 0 (silent)
≫ yug-mahn chil-cheon pal-baeg gu-sib won
(육만 칠천 팔백 구십 원)
₩ 10,450
- 10,000 mahn 만
- 0 (silent)
- 400 sa-baeg 사백
- 50 oh-sib 오십
- 0 (silent)
≫ mahn sa-baeg oh-sib won
(만 사백 오십 원)
₩ 111,110
- *** 110,000 sib eel mahn 십일 만
- 1,000 cheon 천
- 100 baeg 사백
- 10 sib 오십
- 0 (silent)
≫ sib eel mahn cheon baeg sib won
(십일만 천 백 십 원)
*** Number 1 is spoken only for the case "110,000" won. This is because, if you remove "eel" between "sib" and "mahn", it represents 100,000 won, which is not 110,000. Aside from that, number 1s at the other positions stay silent.
