What’s difference in Hangul(hangeul), Hangukmal and Hangukeo ?

by KOREAN VIBE 2020. 5. 7.

Hello ! How are you ?

Have you ever been confused for some similar Korean words indicating Korean language before?

Here is a clear explanation about 3 similar Korean words that would clarify their notions.

1) Hangul (Hangeul) 한글

2) Hanguk-mal 한국말

3) Hanguk-eo 한국어

These are all indicating Korean language, but whan you can distinguish is the word "Hangul".

Because this indicate only the Korean alphabet, not the entire language.

Let's get it quick and simple below !

  • (한글) First of all, "Hangul (or Hanguel)" means Korean alphabets such as consonants and vowels.

  • (한국말, 한국어) If someone indicates "Hanguk-mal" or "Hanguk-eo", that means Korean language itself.

So, the expression of "I can speak Hanguk-mal" is natural, yet "I speak Hangul" is not.

To think about it, you also can voice out the alphabets, but the second sentence hardly makes sense.

Each korean character is composed of 2 or 3 components

  • First, Consonants

  • Second, Vowels

  • Third, Final consonants (optional)

If you are studying Korean - from Hangul most likely, the first step of the study would be learning how to read Hangul consonants and hangul vowels together. Because they wouldn't make any meaningful sound by itself. After that, move onto final consonants of Korean alphabet. The final consonants look quite same to main consonants. The only thing you know about them is the sound is a little different when those are positioned at the bottom.

You can check out one by one. Hope you keep up the interesting Hangul study. 화이팅 !
